Bonfire Night

Every year on the 5th of November, people in England celebrate the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes is remembered.
In 1605, a group of Roman Catholics tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and to kill King James I. The group was known as the Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes was a member of it. They had rolled gunpowder into the cellars of the Houses of Parliament but their plans were not successful. Guards arrested and tortured the men.
Nowadays, on that day people consume jacket potatoes, sausages and black peas with vinegar. They also used to have big fireworks, which are now forbidden. The bonfires on which Guy is burnt in effigy are part of that night too.
